How does SEO work: the two audiences of your Search Engine Optimmization

The term "SEO" has become so widely used lately, and yet many people seem to have misconceptions about what Search Engine Optimization actually does and what it entails. Companies spend increasingly generous budgets on SEO, keywords are researched, rankings are tracked, ads are tested and launched, black hat methods are employed - and a lot of confusion remains.

How does SEO work?

Content marketing in Edmonton
The way that SEO works is two-fold, because your audience is two-fold: you are trying to market your website or blog or electronic newsletter simultaneously to robots and humans. How can these two things reconcile? I've worked with clients before that were wondering why their website with, say, the very best smartphones in Edmonton as the keyword worked so well for the robotic audience but wasn't so well received by the living and breathing readership. Search Engine Optimization cannot be a means to itself - when the eventual goal is to simply rank higher in Google results, disaster would inevitably follow when your potential readers and thus customers would click on that fortunate first page link and find content that is beyond comprehension and common sense - simply put, cruel.

Why quality content is important for your SEO

If someone tells you they can improve your Search Engine Optimization in a minute, they are not talking about your human readership, they are focusing exclusively on the crawl bots visiting your website in search for new information. Quality original human-oriented and interesting content, in the meantime, takes time to write, time to edit and time to implement throughout your online presence. This type of content is not the type stuffed with SEO keywords - but it has a much greater potential of leaving a positive mark in both your Search Engine Optimization and your relationship with potential customers in the long run. So which would you choose - the shortcut or the lasting solution?

Do micro-job sites and offers kill quality content marketing?

It's hard to research anything content-related nowadays without being bombarded with hundreds of poorly worded ads, blog posts and websites offering top-notch copywriting services for $5 or $2 or $1. The world, it seems, is going mad with these offers and the confusion they create. Can you really get quality content for $1? Yes, about 10 words, at most. Content marketing is not a rubber-stamp process (at least, it shouldn't be). It takes creative thinking, it takes research and it takes dedication. In the end, the investment you should make today is to make sure that your website, blog, social media and other copy are not only stuffed with keywords "for the sake of SEO" but actually readable, attractive, original and inspiring. Do all of these things come for free? No. Are they worth it? Beyond expression.

Customer feedback is always helpful. It can also make you smile like a baby.

Content writing as usual?

As you may know up close, the life of a content writer or online marketing professional is not always glamorous and there is always at least one (permanently) unhappy or marginally happy customer somewhere on the radar. Content writing means sometimes writing about things you've never experienced personally or even hope you would never need to experience.

Content marketing as an education

At the same time, online marketing is also a great school. Over the past few years, I've written about, among others, health care, national defense, UFOs, ahem, online marketing strategies, teaching methods, grocery sales, bison meat (yes, my favorite example), ways to stop smoking, life insurance and taxes. I don't know another job that gives you this kind of exposure to the everyday worlds of hundreds of other professions: I truly find this a great experience!

Back to that word I just mentioned: taxes

Now here comes the main reason for writing this whole post, which is to share some feedback I just received from a customer (used with permission):

This is one of the best pieces of writing I've ever seen in my life and I want to marry him except I am already married. Bravo and I'm not changing a thing..........................run it!!!!!

What do YOU do when you get feedback like this? Please share. I want to double-check if my reaction was adequate.

Learn English or study Russian in Edmonton. You won't regret it.

Today makes me feel very motivated and encouraged as a Russian tutor and English instructor. While building my new business website, I decided that I would go ahead and ask some of my former students to give an honest and fair appraisal of my teaching ability, so that I can could then share their opinions on my website, instead of only my own. I already have a few of their responses.

I am thrilled to see that even months (and sometimes years) after I last was their Russian teacher or English teacher, students remember having fun in class, learning a lot and being motivated to develop as human beings. It also seems that I'm patient, but strict. "Thank you so much for all the patience and learning :)", writes one student. "It was well crafted balance of orderliness and creativity", adds another. Waiting for more of them to respond...

Professional Russian tutor in Edmonton

If only I could express how I want to be back in the classroom! Not even necessarily a classroom. Just any space where I'm interacting with eager minds and teaching them about the Russian language, about my native culture, about ways they can integrate into the Canadian university context and so on and so forth. Teaching is something that runs in my family. It's the best thing in life.

Why your business/organization needs a website. Now.

Build websites Edmonton
When you browse the Internet, what annoys you the most? Perhaps it's broken links or pop-up windows or flashy animation. For a lot of people, it is being unable to find what they are looking for online or being given only bare-bone minimal information instead of an opportunity to get details, ask questions and avoid spending more time on the phone.

If your business or organization currently has no website, or your website looks empty, abandoned, unprofessional or barely ever updated, you are missing out on potential clients, customers, leads and visits. Competition these days is quite fierce, and being web-savvy is a factor that is now important to people deciding between you and others in your field. How I write SEO-oriented and keyworded texts

Writing a SEO-focused keyword-rich thought-through article or blog post is simple - you simply don't even think about it being all that when you start to write. If you focus on the keywords and even the strictly-defined topic, your mind will not wander, that's true, but the writing will not flow at all. Thus the best way to start your (future) SEO-obsessed keyword-stuffed article/post is to relax and forget about Search Engine Optimization for a few minutes.

SEO keyword writing
Don't let the bison scare you
Let's take a look at an example:

  1. You are asked (god forbid...) to write a 500-word article with the keywords "best bison meat shop Edmonton".
  2. You stare at your email for a few minutes, wondering how you can actually write about this "best bison meat shop [in] Edmonton" without saying what or where that store is.
  3. You get a drink. No, just a glass of water.
  4. You sit down and think about what you know about bison and meat and shops.
  5. You start to put on paper you general imaginary impressions of bison meat being somehow different from regular beef that most people would have tried, then you switch to talking about the fact that quality bison meat is difficult to find in this great city of a million inhabitants, then you start to muse about what the "best bison meat shop in Edmonton" would be like.
  6. You go to the beginning of your article and integrate your "what if" wishful thinking bit about the meat shop into the earlier parts of the piece.
  7. Done.
Trying to write based on the keyword does not (with some exceptions) work as well. Give it a shot yourself.

Introducing the Language part of my business

Both of these can be offered in-person or online, individually or to groups. I have more than a decade of language teaching experience and I'm confident I can help you improve your English and/or Russian. We just need to work together. Contact me today to set up your first lesson.

Why I like my job as a content writer

In what other job but content writing can one research methods of survival in a remote area without an IPhone in the same week that one writes about the warmth and comfort given by alpaca gloves and the same week that one builds a website for a non-profit working with unemployed youths in Asia? An experienced content writer can do all of these things - with pleasure, interest and due diligence to every project.

When I first got into SEO and content writing almost full-time a few years ago now, I had no idea it would take me this far. Now, with technical projects on welding and backup server operation behind me, in bundle with rather silly "Write something about something and if you have any questions, don't ask me, as I know nothing about this stuff" projects, I'm ready for anything. Surprise me!

Research is an essential part of good writing

Nowadays, lots of individuals and companies offer quick and easy content writing services. It is not always about the writing itself, however. Researching the topic at hand and making your writing argumentative is more important than creating a lot of new verbage. Wouldn't you agree that SEO and keywords are all very well, but it would be nice if the articles created for these purposes were also linked to the wider scope of knowledge and facts?

With 12 years of university education in language and communications, I have the necessary skills and background to conduct deep meaningful research to substantiate the content I create with something readers can rely on. Contact me today to discuss your next project.
